In Ancient Sea. Current Tide, Deborah Hesse presents sculptural wall constructions that merge industrial materials—Plexiglas, luminescent paints, color gels, and found objects—with natural forms to create glowing, multidimensional environments. These works evoke underwater worlds, celestial maps, and microscopic life, blurring boundaries between the terrestrial and the cosmic.
For this solo exhibition, Hesse draws inspiration from the primordial seas of New Mexico, bridging her longstanding fascination with marine ecosystems and her deep personal connection to the region’s landscape. The title Ancient Sea. Current Tide reflects this continuum—linking primordial origins with present realities and the shifting dimensions we navigate today. By referencing prehistoric oceans, her work offers a poetic meditation on time, transformation, and the unseen forces that shape the physical world and living systems. Together, the pieces form a sensory map—linking virtual, physical, and constructed worlds while tracing connections across time.
